The Beethoven Chums & The Revolution

  • © SVT – Swedish Television (archive photo)

Beethoven has been idolized by many through history. Nietzsche, Wagner, Ibsen and Bergman. All men with great egos and perpetual love for the German composer. Beethoven himself admired the Revolution and the revolutionary Napoleon – until the French general declared himself Emperor and no longer fought for Liberté, Égalité, Fraternité. August Strindberg, the Swedish writer of Miss Julie etc, devoted himself to the ”genius” and founded a handpicked group of ”worthy musical men” called The Beethoven Chums. Celebrated pianist Roland Pöntinen plays the favourite pieces of the Chums and other Beethoven devotes: The vivacious Appassionata (Sonata No. 23 in F minor) and the spooky Storm Sonata (No. 17 in D minor).
