West Side Story. Bernstein's Broadway Hit
A musical premiered 1957 in New York has become a worldwide hit. Leonard Bernstein made musical history with a completely new mixture of jazz and Latin American music. Rivalling youth gangs, a forbidden love, three deaths and no happy ending. Something never seen on Broadway before. West Side Story challenged all the traditions. It is Bernstein's greatest triumph as a composer and the most played musical ever. But it seemed to lie on the rest of his works like a curse. The enormous success of the musical surpassed everything he wrote later.
