Adriana Lecouvreur must have a superior cast and conductor to succeed. The Met is providing that. Sir David McVicar’s production brings the world of the theatre to vivid life, with all of the drama playing out in a working replica of a Baroque playhouse. Adriana is at its core a torturous love triangle. Anna Netrebko, Piotr Beczała and Anita Rachvelishvili claim those roles so tenaciously that the drama bristles with passion and danger. And Gianandrea Noseda leads a vigorous, exacting and pulsing performance, drawing out inner details and lending lightness.
