Preludes To A Lost Time – Gidon Kremer Plays Mieczysław Weinberg

  • © Angie Kremer

In Preludes To A Lost Time, recorded at the Gogol Center Moscow, Gidon Kremer plays his violin adaptation of the 24 Preludes op. 100 for violoncello solo by Mieczysław Weinberg to projections of black-and-white images of Lithuanian photographer Antanas Sutkus. The work can be regarded as a milestone in Kremer’s artistic involvement with the music of this remarkable composer. The emotionally charged “sonic imagery” of the Preludes and Antanas Sutkus’ highly expressive photographs create a dynamic force that allows the audience to enter into the difficult times and “lost world” of the Soviet Union in the 1960s.
