Charlie Chaplin – The Composer

  • Modern Times – Stefanos Tsialis conducting the Hamburger Symphoniker © Tobias Albrecht

Not too many people are aware of the fact that the ingenious slapstick actor and filmmaker was also a gifted composer. For Charlie Chaplin music was not only an ornamental addition, for him it was an essential dramaturgic tool that in many scenes defined tempo and rhythm. Proven control freak that he was, just choosing appropriate music bits could not satisfy him, so he started creating his own film score: City Lights became his premiere as a film composer. With an abundance of original material from the Chaplin archives Dominik Wessely’s film gives fascinating insights into this facet of Chaplin’s oeuvre.
