Fernand Cortez
Gaspare Spontini was called upon by Napoleon to compose a heroic opera for the Paris Opéra. Fernand Cortez, a legendary 16th-century Spanish captain involved in the conquering of Mexico was the protagonist – his only desire was to free the Mexican people from slavery. It represented the perfect match for Napoleon, who – like Cortez – wanted to appear as a representative of liberal values. Fernand Cortez debuted at the Opéra on 28 November 1809. Spectacular staging and vivid orchestration guaranteed the opera’s success. The glory of Napoleon was greatly exalted, Fernand Cortez became the symbolic opera of his empire.
