Madama Butterfly

  • © NHK – Japan Broadcasting Corporation

Some say that Madama Butterfly is the most famous Japanese woman in the world. Chocho-san’s pure love for Pinkerton is depicted under a new direction by Amon Miyamoto. The opera is set in the United States, 30 years after the death of Cio-cio-san. Pinkerton, suffering from a serious illness, lays in bed and shows a letter which tells their encounter to their son whom she left behind… It is an enjoyable staging featuring fine singers from Japan including Hiromi Omura who performed the title role at the Festival Puccini held in Italy. Andrea Battistoni conducts the orchestra.
