Maracatus – An African Diáspora
During two and a half centuries over 1 million African slaves were brought to Brazil from the west coasts of Africa, mainly Angola. Their masters were the Portuguese who wisely crowned a king in order to control the tribes more easily. The cerimony of crowning became a party that laid the foundations for ethnic celebrations like Carnival. This cerimony was called Maracatus.
