Martha Argerich, Lahav Shani & The Vienna Symphony: Prokofjev & Rachmaninoff
An evening of Russian favorites. Prokofiev's 3rd Piano Concerto is his most popular – a highly imaginative work whose decidedly classical form makes it highly accessible. The soloist is one of the grandes dames of the instrument, Martha Argerich, who combines beautiful tone with breakneck virtuosity. In the second half, Lahav Shani conducts the Vienna Symphony with Sergei Rachmaninoff's Symphonic Dances – a rich work full of rhythmic power, drama and idyllic musical moments. Rachmaninoff, who was always highly self-critical, would later describe it as his best work.
