Mazepa

Tchaikovsky composed Mazepa after Poltava, a poem by Alexander Pushkin, based on a historical event, the battle of Poltava in 1709, which opposed the army of Peter I of Russia and the troups of Charles XII of Sweden with the support of the Ukrainian Cossacks' Hetman Ivan Mazepa.
