Teodor Currentzis & musicAeterna: Messa Da Requiem

  • Teodor Currentzis © Lisa Calipso

When Rossini died in 1868, Giuseppe Verdi summoned his composer colleagues to help him compose the collaborative work Messa Per Rossini. The work was never completed, but Verdi wrote his section: the closing Libera Me. It was the seed of his Messa Da Requiem – one of the most popular choral works of all time. It is often ironically referred to as Verdi's "best opera", and there’s no denying its operatic character. With opera reformer Teodor Currentzis conducting at the venue of the premiere, the Chiesa di San Marco in Milan, the monumental work is cast in a new light.
