Mirga Gražinytė-Tyla & Gabriela Montero: Šerkšnytė, Tchaikovsky & Brahms

From the depths – Mirga Gražinytė-Tyla opens this concert with De Profundis, composed by her fellow Lithuanian Raminta Šerkšnytė in 1998. It's music which emerges from and fades back into silence, yet with an added sense of optimism. This is followed by Tchaikovsky's Piano Concerto with Gabriela Montero. The imposing opening contrasts heavily with the first work. Finally, after the interval comes Brahm’s Third, taking Gražinytė-Tyla and the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra further into the musical past – which seems appropriate for a work which saw Brahms take his place as an heir to the classical symphonic tradition.
