Paavo Järvi Conducts Strauss & Mahler
A performance by the NHK Symphony Orchestra, Japan’s leading orchestra under the baton of chief conductor Paavo Järvi. The programme includes the final scene from Richard Strauss’ opera Capriccio and the Symphony No. 5 by Mahler. As soloist, Capriccio features soprano Valentino Farcas who has been active at the Salzburg Festival and other occasions. It was a miraculous concert that drew out the best of the NHK Symphony Orchestra, which Christoph Eschenbach once described as an “orchestra whose sound is most German-like in the world today.” The Mahler part, in particular, was a fine passionate rendition worthy of special mention.
