Piano Concertos 3 & 4 By Sergei Rachmaninoff

  • Stanislav Kochanosky, Denis Matsuev © Thierry Mamberti

An event: the complete set of Rachmaninoff's piano concertos in two concerts. Denis Matsuev opens the concert by playing the colossal Third, a concerto "for elephants", as the composer used to say: its incredibly massive chords, the electricity that runs through it and the endurance it requires, all of which find in Matsuev a piano player able to fulfil these inhumane challenges. The Fourth, perhaps the richest and most adventurous of the series, has probably not yet revealed all its secrets: hearing it is always a source of wonder.
