Rigoletto

In 2019, the Bregenz Festival premiered Giuseppe Verdi's thrilling and spine-chilling masterpiece Rigoletto on its unique lake stage. Verdi's music creates a uniquely intense atmosphere throughout the piece. Gala scenes reminiscent of a circus, an audacious kidnapping and an eerie night-time tempest are contrasted with intimate scenes between father and daughter, and between Gilda and the Duke. Staged on a striking set, dominated by a huge jester’s head, director and stage designer Philipp Stölzl put emphasis on Verdi's unique contrasts between spectacle and intimate chamber play.
