The Dwarf

  • Alexander von Zemlinsky: The Dwarf / Deutsche Oper Berlin © Naxos Audiovisual Division

Princess Donna Clara is getting showered with presents for her 18th birthday, but one gift from the Turkish Sultan stands out from the crowd: a real-life dwarf! She becomes fascinated by this mis-shapen man, attracting her attention with his singing. Blissfully unaware of his physical appearance, the dwarf falls madly in love with the princess, but then he comes face-to-face with his reflection for the first time in his life. Realising this truth, he dies. Tobias Kratzer, who gave his acclaimed debut in Bayreuth in 2019, is considered one of the most interesting stage directors of the younger generation.
