Memorial Concert On The Occasion Of The End Of World War II

  • Daniel Barenboim and the Staatskapelle Berlin © Karl Martin Lötsch

On 8 May 1945, World War II ended in Europe. Exactly 75 years later, the Staatskapelle Berlin, directed by its chief conductor Daniel Barenboim, played a memorial concert on this occasion at the Staatsoper Unter den Linden. The programme consisted of two beautiful pieces of chamber music – the Siegfried Idyll, a gift from Richard Wagner to his wife Cosima in memory of the birth of their son Siegfried, and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's A Little Night Music (Eine kleine Nachtmusik), one of the most famous works for chamber orchestra of all times.
