Starting All Over Again – New Music In Post-War Germany

  • Soviet soldiers play Tchaikovsky in a destroyed apartment in Berlin in 1945 © Dmitry Baltermants

New Music after World War II was part of the plan of the Allies to reeducate the Germans and dispel the spectre of the Nazis who had defamed and forbidden avantgarde music as "degenerate art". Now atonal and twelve-tone music together with contemporary music of the occupying powers are being played in the concert halls. But with the start of the Cold War and the Iron Curtain falling across Europe, music becomes a political football of the conflicting interests of East and West.
