Beethoven – The Complete Quartets By The Ebène Quartet – Part V
It is assumed that Beethoven was born on 16 December 1770. Therefore, this concert took place on the very day of his 250th anniversary (while the following and last concert, marks his baptism which took place on 17 December). The programme explores the very late Beethoven output. His Quartet op. 135 was his last major work and is famous for its finale: under the introductory chords Beethoven wrote "Muß es sein?" (Must it be?) to which he responds, with the faster main theme, "Es muß sein!" (It must be!). The whole movement is headed "Der schwer gefaßte Entschluß" (The Difficult Decision).
