The Centenary Ring

One of the greatest scandals in opera goes on to become one of its greatest moments. Protests, interruptions, brawling, citizens initiatives, leaflets distributed in outrage and musicians leaving the orchestra pit in disgust, all because of disagreements with the interpretation of Wagner’s Ring by conductor Pierre Boulez and director Patrice Chéreau, who was only thirty years old at the time. Yet, the “Centenary Ring” goes on to become a true great moment in music. When finally performed, the audience applauds for 90 minutes and there are 101 curtain calls – entirely unheard-of events on the Green Hill of Bayreuth.
