BBC Proms: Víkingur Ólafsson With The Philharmonia Orchestra Conducted By Paavo Järvi

  • Philharmonia, Paavo Järvi © Mark Allan

Víkingur Ólafsson joins the Philharmonia for his Proms debut under the baton of Paavo Järvi. On the programme are Bach’s intricate Keyboard Concerto in F minor and Mozart’s stormy Piano Concerto in C minor. Like Glenn Gould, another outstanding performer of Bach and Mozart, it would be a mistake to call Ólafsson’s playing more technical and intellectual than emotional. While he is an understated presence at the keyboard, his entire focus is pulled into the flow of a piece and driven by its emotional pull. Ólafsson’s performance is framed by two Russian masterpieces – Prokofiev’s bijou First and Shostakovich’s Ninth Symphony.
