Der Freischütz

In a village with archaic customs, the young hunter Max must pass a shooting test in order to be able to marry his beloved, Agathe. Carl Maria von Weber and his librettist Friedrich Kind oscillate between a ghost story, a fairy tale and the interaction between heaven and hell. The plot revolves around a diabolical ritual in the Wolf's Throat, where a pact is made with Samiel to throw magic balls that never miss their target. The composer stated that the opera was celebrated by the public at its world premiere in Berlin in 1821 with "the most incredible enthusiasm."
