Don Giovanni – Salzburg Festival 2021

Mozart's “Don Giovanni” was supposed to premiere in 2020 at the Salzburg Festival. Due to the pandemic the production had to be postponed and in 2021, the dream team Romeo Castellucci and Teodor Currentzis could finally realize their profound view of the work on the Great Festival stage. For Castellucci, who was responsible for direction, stage, costumes and lighting, approaching Don Giovanni meant confronting the ambiguity and complexity as well as the inner imbalance that Mozart gives the protagonist of his opera. Castellucci saw his fascination with the character in the essential ambivalence of vitality and destruction.
