  • Caruso als Clown Canio in Pagliacci © AF archive / Alamy Stock Foto

Enrico Caruso’s life was as melodramatic as the plots of so many of the operas he sang. His phenomenal tenor voice made him famous throughout the world and the first pop star in musical history. The background to a little-known assassination attempt in Cuba now allows a new look at the legendary voice of the century, which today forms part of mankind’s cultural heritage. Enrico Caruso was a phenomenon produced by Italian opera at the end of the 19th century. And to this day he remains its greatest mystery.
