Georg Anton Benda: A Composer's Portrait

Georg Anton Benda (1722–1795), whose 300th birthday will be celebrated in 2022, is one of the most important composers of the 18th century. In 1749, he entered the service of the Duke of Gotha as Kapellmeister. His melodrama "Ariadne auf Naxos" and orchestral works were recorded at the historical Goethe Theatre in Bad Lauchstädt. In his melodramas, Benda attempted to fuse spoken word and music. The beauty of language was to be in the focus.
