Gustav Mahler In Leipzig: The Birth Of A Titan

  • Altes Gewandhaus, Großer Saal © Gewandhaus-Archiv

One episode in Mahler's biography remains underexposed: his time in Leipzig. Mahler was 26 when he came to Leipzig in 1886. At that time, the city was considered the musical center of Europe, along with Paris and Vienna. He quickly was well-known as Kapellmeister. After the premiere of the opera "Die drei Pintos" by Weber, which he had newly arranged, Mahler was celebrated. Inspired by the success, Mahler wrote down his first symphony in May 1888 in only six weeks. He labels his symphonic debut "Titan" for a while. After its completion, it was clear to him that being a composer would be his destiny from now on.
