Münchner Philharmoniker, Elisabeth Kulman & Semyon Bychkov

Next to the genre of the symphony, the song captivated Mahler’s attention throughout his life. In the Kindertotenlieder, Mahler set to music five poems by Friedrich Rückert, in which the poet gave voice to his anguish after the death of his children. Dvořák’s Eighth Symphony impresses with its wealth of ideas and with the thematic linking of the four movements. As Dvořák had published the Eighth in London, it received the misleading title “The English” but was premiered in Prague. However, Dvořák conducted the Eighth in Cambridge on the eve of his appointment as honorary doctor of music.
