Saul

Saul is the King of Israel, chosen by God and venerated by the people, but after David killed Goliath, the people praise David as the new hero. In Saul’s mind one sentence echoes: “Saul has slain his thousands, and David his tens of thousands.” This hurts Saul deeply and madness takes him. When Saul repeatedly fails to kill David he consults the Witch of Endor, but she tells him only that his own end is near. And really, he dies in a battle. David becomes king and marries Saul’s daughter.
