The St Matthew Passion, Bach

  • © ARTE

Raphaël Pichon, at the head of his Pygmalion ensemble, belongs to a new generation of conductors who are fascinated by the sound produced by old instruments. After his 2018 performance of St John Passion, and faithful to the Easter festival tradition, he returns this year to conduct Bach’s St Matthew Passion, an oratorio brimming with virtuoso airs, sung narratives and extensive choral music. He is surrounded by a remarkable array of solo voices accompanied by the children's choir of Radio France, allowing the maestro to recreate the intimate yet heart-rending, tender yet fervent soul of an epic sacred opera.
