Britten's "The Turn of the Screw" is more than a Victorian psychological thriller and gripping chamber opera. It can be read as a straightforward frightening ghost story. Director Immo Karaman lets the worlds of spirits and the living collide with one another in a contrasting black and white aesthetic. An opera that speaks in short, cinematic cuts, of alienation and the abysmal depths of the human psyche. The German magazine OPERNWELT has chosen this production as “important stream” in their Season Review 20/21. Neue Musikzeitung describes it as “...one of the most gratifying streaming results since the lockdown initiatives began.”
