Through The Darkness

  • From Through the Darkness © Copyright 2021 Hilan Warshaw/Overtone Films

Hilan Warshaw's film Through the Darkness illuminates the relationship between two artistic geniuses, and tells the story of two outsiders at the beginning of the 20th century. In 1907, composer Arnold Schönberg made friends with the young and still unknown painter Richard Gerstl. Gerstl and Schönberg not only shared a passion for art, but also a love for the same woman, Mathilde Schönberg. This triangular relationship ultimately led to Gerstl's tragic death at the age of 25, and confirmed Arnold Schönberg's goal of revolutionizing music history with a new way of composing.
