Addio Lugano Bella
“Addio Lugano bella” is undoubtedly the most popular international anarchist song. In 1894, a group of Italian anarchist exiles sought refuge on the shores of Lake Lugano. Amongst them was Pietro Gori, the knight errant of the anarchist movement; he wrote this famous song in prison before being expelled from Switzerland. At the time, throughout Europe, the anarchist movement was striving to raise awareness of social justice issues. Starting from “Addio Lugano bella", we look back at Gori’s role in this turbulent period through the songs he composed to convey his libertarian ideals.
