Das Rheingold (The Rhinegold), Prolog

Alberich, the Nibelung dwarf, steals the Rhine gold from the Rhine girls to forge a ring that confers "infinite power". Meanwhile, Wotan, the father of the gods, is forced to act. To reward the giants Fasolt and Fafner for building the castle of Valhalla, he steals the treasure of the Nibelung with the help of Loge, the cunning fire god. Alberich curses the ring and all its future owners - the tragedy continues. The Rhine Gold is the basis of Richard Wagner's tetralogy, which took him about a quarter of a century to write.
