Lehár’s Giuditta From The Bayerische Staatsoper Munich

Director Christoph Marthaler, known for his stunning theatre evenings, picks up on the ambivalence of the operettas characters by adding to Lehár’s famous melodies music of contemporaries such as Bartók, Korngold, Shostakovich, Ullmann, Eisler and Berg as well as excerpts from Horváth. He sets Lehár’s operetta in the context of its time of origin. Marthaler’s version tells a love story within the turmoil and confusion of the 1930ies, brilliantly realised by a top-class cast: Daniel Behle shines tenorally, Vida Miknevičiūtė is a dramatic title figure, a big, beautiful soprano voice.
