Mahler: Symphony No. 9
Myun-Whun Chung returns to lead the May Orchestra in Gustav Mahler’s Symphony No. 9 in D major. The Ninth was the last symphony that Mahler could finish and in the decade after his death it was natural to interpret it as an omen of an autobiographical nature. The Adagio that closes the Symphony represents the moment of the most intense pathos where the writing becomes gradually lighter and rarefied to arrive at the last bars in which the hesitant sound of the strings in mute vanishes "dying" in the infinity of silence.
