La Voix Humaine – A Film By James Kent
La Voix humaine, as visualised by Emmy and Bafta winning director James Kent, offers an unprecedented cinematic interpretation of Poulenc’s masterpiece. As an hour-long dramatic one-off, it features only one performer, the character known as Elle. It was premiered in Paris in 1930 as a play by Jean Cocteau and subsequently turned into a music drama by his friend Francis Poulenc in 1959. “Filmed in invasive close-up, the camera capturing every anguished thought, hers is a haunting, hyper-real performance. It makes for opera as it’s never usually imagined: an intimate, sensual, sotto voce one-on-one between singer and viewer” (The Telegraph).
