Beethoven: Symphony No. 7, Fidelio Overture / Mahler: Symphony No. 10 Adagio
Beethoven’s Symphony No. 7 in A major, was premièred in Vienna during a musical evening for the benefit of Austrian soldiers returning from the battle of Hanau. Wagner immediately understood its true essence and defined it "the apotheosis of dance". Beethoven’s Overture Leonore, No. 3 Op. 72 b, is the best known of the four overtures composed for Fidelio and represents the drama’s authentic musical summa. The Adagio in F sharp minor is the only movement of Mahler’s Symphony No. 10 to have been orchestrated by the author. The work was to consist of five movements but remained unfinished.
