Obsessed With Light

  • Loie Fuller performing, circa 1905 © Zander & Labisch/Ullstein

Obsessed with Light is about the wildly original performer Loïe Fuller, the American creator of modern dance and an innovator who pioneered the creative use of electricity onstage. Fuller invented a completely new kind of spectacle that combined dance, light, fabric and movement, even building a glass floor so that she could be lit from below. Her work influenced important artists, performers and thinkers of her day and continues today. Anyone who has been to a rock concert has seen a modern version of Fuller’s patented lighting designs. She was one of the first lesbians to attain celebrity in Europe.
