Steps Of Freedom
Religion. Sex. Foreign conquest. Mass migration. Slavery. Cultural fusion. Revolution. In that order… This is the story of how these forces shaped the evolution of a traditional peasant dance into the post-Riverdance global phenomenon it is today. When Irish indentured servants met African slaves in the work camps of 19th Century America, their partially shared experiences and traditions lit a fuse that created Tap, Jazz and much of the new culture that followed. Irish and Black American historians, dancers like Jean Butler and Morgan Bullock, and a series of extraordinary original dance sequences by cutting edge troupes tell the story.
