Holst: The Planets – With Professor Brian Cox & The BBC Symphony Orchestra Conducted By Ben Gernon

  • © BBC Music

100 years after the premiere of Gustav Holst’s The Planets, the BBC Symphony Orchestra and conductor Ben Gernon perform the majestic seven-movement suite at the Barbican Hall in London. But the masterpiece has been given a scientific twist by Prof Brian Cox, who draws on the most up-to-date scientific understanding of our cosmic neighbours from spacecraft like Cassini, Maven and Juno, to cast new light on the planets. Brian Cox unpacks the science available at the time the music was written and compares it to what we know today.
