This interpretation of the Wunderhorn by star conductor Teodor Currentzis and his orchestra from Perm pushes the singers to their very limits. Every last phrase is drawn out, sometimes exaggeratedly so, though always with the requisite artistry. Florian Boesch provides a raw counterpart to Anna Lucia Richter’s shimmering voice. Is the 4th Symphony hard to digest after these colorful little works? Not with Currentzis at the helm: in his hands, the work is more humorous and cutting than ever, without ever sounding fragmentary. Opposites are united in the arresting flow of music, culminating in a brutal encore.
