Halka

  • Halka © Monika Rittershaus

The wealthy estate owner Janusz is up to marry the rich heiress Zofia. Therefore a party is being held. Suddenly, a woman is heard singing piteously in the distance. At the gate Janusz finds the farmgirl Halka with whom he was in love and whom he has now abandoned. But Halka still thinks that he loves her – and she is pregnant. Finally she realises that a wedding is being prepared, but it is not hers. On the wedding day, the villagers take Halka’s side, so the atmosphere is somewhat muted. When Janusz enters the church with his bride Zofia, Halka throws herself into the river.
