“The mother of all orchestras in Germany” that’s how Herbert von Karajan described the Gewandhausorchester Leipzig. In fact, Tchaikovsky, Brahms, Berlioz, Strauss, Nikisch and Furtwängler were just some of the many musicians who clamored to conduct the Gewandhausorchester after Mendelssohn, with its illustrious history dating back to 1743. Shostakovich's Violin Concerto No. 1 with outstanding soloist Baiba Skride and Tchaikovsky's Symphony No. 5 were recorded in May 2019. This is music that is in Leipzig’s blood, but to hear it under the new music director Andris Nelsons is to hear it fresh. Another milestone in Nelsons’ Tchaikovsky cycle with the Gewandhausorchester.
