The Death Of Orpheus

  • La morte d'Orfeo © Ruth Walz

The tragicomic pastorale La Morte D’Orfeo (The Death Of Orpheus) by Stefano Landi is a far less well-known work on the Orpheus theme, but gives a deeper insight into the real meaning of the Orphean myth. The opera is regarded as the first Roman-style secular opera and considered a milestone in the development of the genre. The substantial ensemble numbers are typical of that style, as are the prominent roles for gods, shepherds, and magical creatures. With this staging Pierre Audi is returning – in his last production as director of DNO – to the beginnings of his career and the opera genre.
