Czech Philharmonic: 2021/22 Season Opening Concert
The season opened with one of the most iconic 20th century works. Dmitri Shostakovich refused to evacuate from Leningrad, surrounded by the German army, and wrote a new symphony, the premiere of which was broadcast on radio during the siege in 1942. Semyon Bychkov (the conductor) has close family ties to the event – his mother lived through the siege in Leningrad.
