Baba, The Darwin Orchestra

  • Bostjan Gombac with Neanderthal flute (tidldibab) © Uros Hocevar

The oldest instrument known to musicologists and archaeologists is the bone flute which was first made by a Neanderthal man approximately 60,000 years ago. It was found in a Palaeolithic archaeological site in Slovenia. Nowadays, the prehistoric sounds of the Neanderthal flute are carried on by its reconstruction – tidldibab. This intriguing flute inspired Ziga Stanic to compose a piece for tidldibab and orchestra called Baba. The journey towards true virtuosity on this instrument is undertaken by clarinet player Bostjan Gombac.
