In payment for building the castle Valhalla, the giants Fafner and Fasolt demand that Wotan surrender either the goddess Freia or the golden treasure stolen by the dwarf Alberich from the maidens of the Rhine. Alberich has forged the gold into a ring and also forced his brother Mime to forge a magical helmet. Loge and Wotan capture Alberich and to save his live he must relinquish the treasure and ring. Erda warns Wotan about the destructive power of the ring. The giants arrive and the treasure drives Fafner to kill Fasolt. The gods walk towards Valhalla.
