Tales Of Offenbach
The 200th anniversary of Jacques Offenbach is a good opportunity to remind us of the composer whom Rossini lovingly called "the Mozart of the Champs-Elysées“. Born into the family of a Cantor in Cologne, he studied at the Paris Conservatory at the age of 14, joined the orchestra of the Opéra-Comique as cellist, was fêted as a virtuoso of his instrument, obtained a license for a theatre, entertained all of Paris with his operettas and gained recognition with his Tales Of Hoffmann. Dame Felicity Lott narrates, stage directors Laurent Pelly and Barrie Kosky discuss his work and interest in our times.
