Violanta

Korngold wrote Violanta at the age of 17, long before becoming an award-winning composer for Hollywood films. The plot revolves around Violanta’s desire to revenge her sister’s suicide caused by the seducer Alfonso. She plans to have him killed by her husband but falls for him and sacrifices her life to save him. The refined orchestration perfectly paints the contrast between the dark and deadly atmosphere of the oppressive world which the husband forces upon Violanta and the sudden glimpses of life, sensuality, and passion brought by her lover. A very elegant stage direction by Pizzi and an exemplary conduction by Steinberg.
