Hope And Longing – On Madama Butterfly At Bregenz Festival
This “Making of” looks behind the scenes and traces the process of creating this story of boundless longing at the Bregenz Festival on Lake Constance. Presenting Puccini’s opera “Madama Butterfly” for the first time, Andreas Homoki stages the clash of American and Japanese culture as the drama of a “migrant longing”. The stage design also tells of this – an oversized sheet of paper, painted with Japanese landscape pictures, but crumpled up and thrown into the lake. How do Homoki and his team create an arc of tension between finely conceived images and the natural scenery of Lake Constance?
